Smithfield is located in northern Cache County, Utah, not far from the Idaho border.  In January of 2007, its population was estimated at 9,184.

Smithfield was originally called Summit Creek by its original settlers.  In 1857, Brigham Young sent Robert Thonley and his cousin, Seth Langton, to the Summit Creek area from Salt Lake City to establsih a settlement.  The next summer more settlers arrived and a fort was built.  The Summit Creek settlement continued to grow, and was eventually renamed Smithfield.

Today Smithfield hosts a variety of businesses and industries, and is home to Summit Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, and Sky View High School.

The Smithfield City Police Department has been serving the people of Smithfield since 2001 under the leadership of Chief Johnny W. McCoy.  The employees of the Smithfield City Police Department are proud to serve the citizens of Smithfield and strive to uphold the standards of the community that have persisted since its settlement.
